Two public front doors now face Hamlin Groves Trail, just 58 address numbers apart. The Orange County Library System's Horizon West Branch opened on Oct. 10 at 4657 Hamlin Groves Trail. Horizon West Regional Park sits at 4715. That property opened in December 2010, when it offered horseback riding and hiking and little else. The library arrived all at once and fully stocked. The park has come in phases over 16 years, and the next phase is still behind construction fencing.
Both places were designed to work together, and they do. They also keep different hours and run on different construction calendars. Starting Nov. 1, when clocks fall back, the gap between those schedules starts to shape what a weekday afternoon on this stretch of road looks like.
A Library Built to Face the Park
The library is part of the park experience by design. OCLS describes the branch's garden beds as planted with shrubs and flowers "carefully chosen to benefit the wildlife and wild spaces of the adjacent Horizon West Regional Park." The outdoor area also has a StoryWalk with a new featured book each month, a percussion path of outdoor instruments, and a performance area. OCLS photos from construction show the StoryWalk winding through Florida-friendly gardens, and the children's area inside is bee-themed.
The two properties share more than plantings. The Friends of Horizon West Regional Park, a volunteer group that runs the park's visitor guide, says horse trailers park at the library lot and that equestrians can ride straight into the park from the library's gravel parking area.
The opening-day crowd also arrived with the park in mind. By 10 a.m. on Oct. 10, hundreds of people were waiting outside in 91-degree heat, and more than 1,000 had come through by the end of the day, Horizon West Magazine reported. One mother of four told the magazine, "My kids can ride scooters or bikes to borrow books." Janet Allen, who came with her grandchildren, described the building another way in the same story:
"People can get to know each other here instead of going home with the garage door closing behind them."
The branch got here faster than usual, too. OCLS CEO Steve Powell said at the ribbon cutting that the system "typically take[s] about twice this long" to go from construction to opening.
Where the Two Schedules Split
Here are the posted hours for both properties.
Horizon West Branch library, according to OCLS:
- Sunday: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Monday through Thursday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Horizon West Regional Park gates, according to the Orange County park page and the Friends' visitor guide:
- Open daily at 8 a.m.
- Close at 8 p.m. during Eastern Daylight Time
- Close at 6 p.m. during Eastern Standard Time
Through Oct. 31, the park stays open later than the library every day of the week. That changes on Sunday, Nov. 1. From then until spring, the park gates and the library close together at 6 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Monday through Thursday, the library stays open an hour after the trails close. Mornings run the other way. The park opens at 8 a.m., two hours before the library on most days and five hours before it on Sundays.
In practice, a winter weekday on Hamlin Groves Trail works best in the right order. Walk the trails or use the playground first, then head next door to the library for the last hour of the day. If you start inside, you may come out to locked park gates.
What Fills the Library's Extra Hour
The building is big enough to stay busy after dark. OCLS lists the branch at 20,000 square feet, one of the largest in the system, with 45,000 books on the shelves at opening. It has two reservable study rooms, three meeting rooms the public can book, and a combined meeting room that holds 100 people.
The standout space is the Media Lab. It's a 191-square-foot room for up to four people, with a green screen, lighting, microphones, a light box for product photography, and audio, video and photo editing software. One three-hour session per day is free. We spend a lot of time behind cameras on our team, and a free green-screen studio on a neighborhood road is a real asset for anyone building a small business, a podcast or a school project.
Here's what's on the branch calendar between now and early November:
- Oct. 23: Escape Room Junior: Monster Library Mystery
- Oct. 28 and Nov. 4: Preschool Tales
- Oct. 29: Baby Storytime: Peek-a-Boo
- Nov. 6: Homeschool Junior: Outdoor Games
Beyond those dates, the regular storytime lineup includes Toddler Tales, Baby Tales and Baby Play & Connect. The adult schedule includes classes on sewing, macramé, Canva, 3D design and getting started with 3D printers.
The Park's Half Is Still Being Built
The park's current amenities came with Phase 1A, a $15.6 million project that added an access road, utilities, an inclusive playground, restrooms, a trail segment and a large pavilion with eight tables and two grills. Orange County says the playground, restroom and pavilion opened Feb. 16, 2026. According to the Friends' guide, the park also has 165 paved parking spaces, a chilled bottle filler at the restrooms, and more than 7 miles of unpaved trails. County crews mow most of the trails, and volunteers do additional clearing.
Phase 1B broke ground June 18 with a budget of $5,565,000. It adds a splash pad, power and water hookups for a farmers market, a kayak and canoe launch on Lake Hartley, more parking, and sidewalks connecting the amenities. The West Orange Times & Observer reported the order of work as county parks manager Kyle Kent laid it out. Crews start with underground utilities at the far end of the park near the launch, then build the splash pad, then expand the lot beside the large pavilion with market vendor stubs, and finish with the lakefront dock. Kent said none of Phase 1B will open until all of it is finished. He estimated completion by spring 2027, depending on weather and other factors.
Until then, a few practical details matter on every visit. The Friends' guide says construction vehicles use the park driveways Monday through Friday. It also notes there are no sidewalks along the east and west driveways past the roundabout and estimates it will be "another year, perhaps two" before multi-use sidewalks are built. Pedestrians and cyclists can get in on sidewalks from Hamlin Groves Trail and from Bridgewater Crossings Boulevard at Tiny Road. The guide also warns that parts of the mowed green space near the pavilion will close while electrical service goes in.
The finished plan explains the property line. A splash pad, a kayak launch and market hookups will sit beside a 20,000-square-foot library whose gardens were planted for the same wildlife. Mayor Jerry Demings put the county's total investment in the park at more than $21 million. More than 1,900 people responded to the master-plan surveys from 2019 to 2020. Commissioner Nicole Wilson said she hopes families will see the amenity they picked show up in the finished park.
Stretching the Loop Down Hamlin Groves Trail
The civic stretch now has a couple of nearby stops. Swig opened its Hamlin shop at 5728 Hamlin Groves Trail, the Observer reported, and held its grand opening on Oct. 10, the same Saturday the library opened. A short drive away, Mayday Ice Cream started serving Sept. 17 in the former Abbott's Frozen Custard space, with homemade waffle cones, Horizon West Info reported. The shop is at 16406 New Independence Parkway, Suite 120.
Here's one way to string the posted hours together on a weekday after Nov. 1:
- Get to the park by mid-afternoon for the trails or the shaded playground, and leave before the gates close at 6 p.m.
- Walk over to the library for the StoryWalk, then go inside before it closes at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
- Finish with a drink from Swig or a cone from Mayday on the way home.
On weekends the library and park close together at 6 p.m., so mornings work better. The trails open at 8 a.m. and the library opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Mark Saturday, Nov. 14, too. Flavor Fest Horizon West runs 5 to 9 p.m. at the Lake District green space, 14111 Shoreside Way.
As this part of Horizon West fills in, our team at Gavin Hatch is following each new phase on Hamlin Groves Trail, and we film these places the way neighbors actually use them.
